What The Hell Is Going On With American Idol?

Oh brother.  It seems everyone I know is watching and voting for American Idol these days.  A few people even told one of my musician singer/songwriter friends that he should go on American Idol because he would surely win.  Well, I have news for all of you Idol loving gawkers.  American Idol is a dream for people who want to be famous, not musicians.  Sure, you have to be able to sing to be on it so you're technically a musician, even though I would argue singing is the easiest "instrument" to play.  No, wait.  I will argue singing those awful cheesy songs they sing on American Idol is one of the easiest "instruments" to play.  As my musician friend pointed out to me, there are two basic reasons why any self-respecting musician would not dream of becoming an "American Idol."  They are:

1) You are on their terms.  Meaning, you don't sing your own songs, they don't care what you think (which is what you write), you are a pawn in their pop star corporation.  The saying "Shut up and sing" comes to mind.

2) Congratulations, you now work for the man.  Meaning, you're going to do exactly what they say when, because even after you've won Idol, you are representing American Idol still.  It should be obvious to you that the first Idols producing different genre singers so they don't compete isn't just an ideal legit ending for the network.  My friends, this stuff is better calculated and executed than Dan Rather's accusations of George Bush's [insert claim here].

What happened to music that moves us and inspires us?  Is that what American Idol does to people now?  I will still pass.  Give me a musician who writes his own songs and they provoke me to think about something I may or may not have agreed with.  Give me a musician that sings from deeper down because he/she is speaking to you, not just screaming some cheesy song probably written by the Back Street Boys old songwriter with a few high scales to impress people.  Give me a musician who cares about the music more than the fame.  Give me my musician friend, who sadly, none of you will probably ever hear of, thanks to mentalities like American Idol.
