(Previously written during the airing of season 1)

Ok, who didn't tune in to American Idol recently? Everyone was so taken by all these talented kids aspiring to be the next Britney Spears or Justin Timbersomething, Survivor was actually forgotten about for a few minutes. I'd like to say that I stayed true to my boycott of the show, but a friend came over one Tuesday night and insisted on tuning it in. The show wasn't as bad as I had expected, the 5 or 6 remaining contestants were very talented in my opinion, even if they were demonstrating it by singing cheesy Michael Bolton type songs.

My friend was absolutely taken by the dramatic contest tension and excitement, and couldn't wait to hear from the judges. Ahh, the judges. "Who is this Simon guy and where does he get his authority?" I ask.
"He's a big record producer," he replies.
"Really? Which one?"
"Not sure but he's responsible for a lot of big time artists and hits."

Well it turns out after some incredible investigating prowess from yours truly, Simon was behind the unarguable huge success of Curiosity Killed The Cat, Sonia, and boy band Five. I'd say that qualifies him.
Randy Jackson seems to have better credits though they are awfully vague, leading this cynic to believe they may be exaggerated for hype. As far as the last judge goes, I think we all know who Paula Abdul is, though we may have forgot her wonderful controversy over if she really even sang on her own CD. Really all American Idol needed was a Nitro Girl from the wrestling world to make it complete.

It was only a matter of time before the reality TV train chugged through Musictown. I was hoping that it wouldn't, but mainstream music has become so manufactured it's not shocking.

I'm not sure which is funnier to me at this point: The fact that Paula Abdul has become an ongoing judge of talent or that there is going to be America Idol II and possibly one every year. I mean, how many pop star idols do we really need? I guess it's nice to know the producers have enough faith in their new star that the public will need to start looking for another in six months.

I know, you're saying right now I've missed the point, and you're right. Even though this show is based on music American Idol is targeting viewers, not listeners. I managed to catch enough to get the point: Viewers cared more about watching some poor kid get told he/she sucked rather than seeing a talented up and coming singer.

As the mainstream music listeners venture more and more towards one hit Idols, Earwax is here to put our guilty pleasures into perspective and stick up for the hard working musician.
